UAE, Egypt, Oman, KSA, and Algeria are leading the hydrogen market in Arab countries, setting ambitious targets for hydrogen production. For example, the UAE aims to be among the top ten hydrogen producers globally by 2031, while Oman plans to produce 8.5 million tonnes of clean hydrogen annually by 2050.
4. Hydrogen Projects in MENA: Egypt, Oman, and UAE Taking the Lead
As of April 1, 2023, Egypt, Oman, and UAE have taken the lead in announced hydrogen and ammonia projects among Arab countries, with Egypt accounting for 31% (24 projects). of the total projects in the region and Oman and UAE as the second and third lead of 15% (12 projects) and 14% (11 projects). However, it is also noteworthy to mention that Arab countries are primarily focusing on the production of green hydrogen and ammonia, with 68 projects dedicated to these green commodities, as compared with number of projects in transport (1 project) and those in application scenarios (4 projects). This highlights the region's commitment to renewable energy and signifies significant opportunities for the production of green hydrogen and ammonia in the Arab countries.
5. Germany and MENA: Pioneering Green Hydrogen Trade for Reliable Global Exports.
Germany is actively involved in boosting green hydrogen trade in the MENA region for reliable exports. The German government is importing hydrogen from MENA, particularly from the GCC countries, and has established offices, signed memorandums and sent experts to promote hydrogen cooperation in the region.
6. Morocco: Setting an Example for Green Hydrogen Deployment on a Global Scale.
Morocco is setting an example in exploring green hydrogen deployment on a regional and international scale. The country has developed a National Roadmap for Green Hydrogen and aims to provide high levels of green hydrogen production for local demand and exports. Morocco has established an industry cluster and infrastructure master plan to optimize infrastructure usage and cost savings.
